Secret Letters from 0 to 10 was written by Susie Montergenstern on 1996 who born in US but lived more of 30 years in France where she wrote more of dozens of children`s books. She was France's nominee for the prestigious IBBY Hans Christian Andersen Award for the literary excellence of the body of her work.
Secret Letters from 0 to 10 is a book about a little boy of 10 years whom his mother dead when he was born and he lived with his grandmother (Precious) and the housekeeper (Germaine) because his father disappeared after wife`s burial. Precious who is a silent an old woman with whom Ernest despite living almost knew about her life and what she thought and felt; she never told Ernest something about if his father still lived or didn`t he and why he leave. She treasures a letter from her husband who dead at Second Wars and every day she delighted it, for that Ernest thought that in this letter exist a important secret which changes his life. Germaine was a old woman too who helped Precious to care Ernest`s hygiene and nutrition. She lived along because had not children and also lost her husband. She tried to hide her age with all techniques of makeup.
From ten years, Ernest had a routine life which wakes up, takes his schoolbooks for then goes to the school to learn every day more than last day, at the school he did no talk with anyone he always was with himself at silence, and he had forbidden get something by his classmates, all the girls dreamed of might touch his heart because he was intelligent and handsome; at lunch`s time he always came back to his house and eats healthy snacks made by Germaine. He always takes the same old way; he takes himself straight to school and then straight back home again. Ernest walked so slowly and never even crossed to other side of the street, when he came back to home did his homework while waited to listen with Precious to the eight o`clock news, they had done every evening for all these years.
